Traumatic Brain Injury Assessment Gets an Overhaul

New framework goes beyond the Glasgow Coma Scale to assess TBI severity
The assessment has four pillars: clinical, biomarker, imaging, and modifiers.

  • Clinical pillar: GCS scores and pupillary reactivity
  • Biomarker pillar: glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1), or S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B)
  • Imaging pillar uses CT and MRI to assess intracranial damage
  • Modifier pillar assesses factors that may influence clinical presentation and outcomes, like comorbidities or how the trauma occurred
